Church St. Michael, Berlin Mitte

Design and realisation of the rose window.

In 2016, the Association for the Preservation of St Michael's Catholic Church commissioned us to design and implement a new design for the rose window of St Michael's Church. The wish was to redesign the rose window for the 155th anniversary of St Michael's Church. The aim was to create a new eye-catcher that would make the church interior even more beautiful and delight the faithful during mass.

The design was to have a modern look, a bright colour scheme with bold accents and incorporate the existing cross in the centre circle of the rose window.

The rose window is the eye to the sky, so it made sense to choose blue as the main colour. The design is not realistic or figurative. Rather, it is an abstract, geometric-ornamental treatment of the liturgical colour blue.

The overall result is a radiant window which — symbolically — allows the ‘divine light’ to fall into the interior of the church.

The technique used to create the window is stained-glass. To produce this type of glazing, coloured handmade glass is cut into individual shapes and assembled with lead profiles to form a complete glazing unit.

The glass used is mouth-blown genuine antique glass from the Lamberts glassworks in Waldsassen. The production process has hardly changed for centuries.

We are also happy to advise you on your projects, on the new production or restoration of church windows.
