Church of St Mary on Behnitz, Berlin Spandau

Design and realisation of the church windows.

In 2002, we were commissioned by the owner of the church to design and realise the new windows in the church of St. Marien am Behnitz.

In co-operation with the owner, the Spandau Lower Monument Protection Authority and the art commissioner of the Catholic Church in Berlin, the following design was decided upon:

New designs will be created for all windows, based on the period when the church was built in the mid-19th century and executed in a historicising style. Classical symbols of the Virgin Mary were chosen as motifs in honour of the church's patron saint.

At the centre of each window is a medallion bearing a Christian symbol, also predominantly a symbol of the Virgin Mary. The choir windows were particularly elaborately designed, with the motif ‘Mary with the infant Jesus’ on the right and the ‘Pieta’ on the left.

Finally, the rose window above the altar was designed with the symbol ‘Chalice and Host’.

The production of stained-glass and glass paintings is an ancient art form and dates back to the early Middle Ages (9th century). Coloured and painted glass was assembled into a picture using lead profiles.

Although the tools for cutting glass, burning in colour, soldering etc. may have become more modern, the basic form of production has not changed to this day.
The colourful windows fill the church interior with brightly coloured light and are sure to bring much joy to all church visitors.

The church of St. Marien am Behnitz is still used today as a Catholic place of worship, where church services, weddings and baptisms take place.

We would also be happy to advise you on your projects, the new production or restoration of church windows.
