Zions Church, Berlin -Centre
Restoration of the nave windows of the Zion Church, removal and re-levelling of all glazing, reinstallation with external protective grilles
The Zion Church was consecrated in 1873. It is an important ecclesiastical building, erected on the highest point of old Berlin at the time. Pastor Dietrich Bonhoeffer, who became famous for his active resistance against the Nazi regime, preached and worked in the Zion Church in 1931 and 1932. Before reunification, the Zion Church was an important centre for the opposition movement.
Over the past 30 years, many measures have been carried out to preserve and renovate the Zion Church. In 2011 - 2012, we were able to restore all the windows in the nave of the Zion Church. The aim of the restoration was to secure and preserve the existing windows. To this end, the leaded glazing was removed, dismantled, the glass cleaned and replaced, the leadwork renewed, cemented, wind irons fitted and then the panels reinstalled.
New crossbars, cover rails, external protective grilles and condensation water boxes were made. Comprehensive photographic and written documentation of the work was compiled.
Church windows have a tradition of over 1000 years. War, environmental damage, vandalism, mechanical damage and the effects of the weather have all jeopardised these fragile stained glass windows. Many have been destroyed, disappeared or damaged.
Our task is to save and preserve these windows and keep them for future generations.
