About me
Christiane Mergner, a master glazier and glass painter, has been running her art glass workshop in Berlin since 1996.
Born and raised in beautiful Lower Franconia, she was born with a love of glass. Her parents ran a glazier's workshop, and so she grew up surrounded by coloured glass and linseed oil putty.
After leaving school, Christiane Mergner decided to train as a glass painter at the state glass school in Hadamar. She spent her time as a journeyman in various workshops - in Osnabrück, in East Frisia and finally in Berlin.
At the beginning of the 1990s, Berlin was one of the most exciting cities in the world culturally, politically and socially. Christiane Mergner also wanted to be part of the associated creative spirit of optimism.
After passing her master's examination in the glazier trade in the summer of 1995, she took the plunge into self-employment and opened her art glass workshop in February 1996 on the premises of the Weiberwirtschaft - Europe's largest centre for female founders and entrepreneurs in Berlin-Mitte.
A lot has happened since then and the business has grown. In addition to the art glazier's workshop, the building glazier's workshop was added, later followed by interior fittings with glass, the collaboration with the Italian design company Rimadesio and the online business. What has always remained, however, is Christiane Mergner's great passion - art glazing, the production and restoration of stained glass and glass paintings.
Today, Christiane Mergner wants to refocus on this passion, on her creative origins. In her studio workshop, she creates works of glass art for church windows, stairwell windows, public buildings, listed buildings and old buildings in Berlin. For private or commercial customers.
The craft of stained glass is over 1000 years old and dates back to the Middle Ages, when the great cathedrals were built in Europe. To this day, the techniques of that time have hardly changed. Christiane Mergner works with coloured glass, which is cut, painted and fired.
The glass pieces are then joined together like a mosaic with lead profiles to form a finished glass picture with a luminosity and radiance that no other material possesses.
Christiane Mergner has made it her mission to preserve this heritage, pass on the old technique and give the world many more beautiful stained glass windows.
